In our pursuit of a clean living environment, it's easy to overlook how the chemicals in everyday cleaning products can impact our hormonal balance. Phthalates: These synthetic compounds are often used to enhance fragrances in cleaning products and laundry soaps, as well as to create a gel-like consistency. Phthalates can mimic hormones in the body, disrupting the normal function of the endocrine system. Research has linked them to hormonal imbalances, fertility issues, and an increased risk of certain cancers.
Parabens: Known for their preservative properties, parabens are widely used in cleaning and personal care products. They can mimic estrogen in the body, potentially leading to hormonal disruptions. Traces of parabens have been detected in human tissues, raising concerns about their long-term effects on hormone health.
Triclosan: Triclosan, an antimicrobial agent often found in antibacterial soaps and cleaners, has been shown to interfere with thyroid hormone function. Since the thyroid is vital for regulating metabolism and overall hormonal balance, ongoing exposure to triclosan may lead to hormonal imbalances.
These substances can enter the body through inhalation, skin absorption, or even ingestion, potentially impacting overall health.
..and don’t discount how bad Synthetic fragrances are for you. Pro Tip: Avoid products with synthetic fragrances, which are often labeled as “parfum” or “perfume” on ingredient lists. Manufacturers are not required to disclose the specific chemicals used in these fragrances, which can include harmful substances like phthalates. Synthetic fragrances are commonly found in laundry products, but fragrance-free alternatives are available and can be a safer choice for your hormone health. This also means opening the window if you’re in an Uber that has an air freshener!!
